Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Member Chuck Daly led the Detroit Pistons to back-to-back NBA Championship titles in 1989 and 1990 (leading the Detroit Pistons to nine straight playoff appearances in the 1980s and 1990s) and coached the original United States Olympic "Dream Team" to a gold medal in 1992. Chuck Daly-coached teams made the playoffs and averaged over .500 in eleven full seasons (including two with the New Jersey Nets from 1992 to 1994). Chuck was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994 and was selected by a national media panel as one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA history in 1996 and, on June 2, 1997 decided to leave the broadcast booth and accept the invitation of the Orlando Magic to become their new head coach. This venture will mark the fourth NBA head coaching tenure for Coach Daly who spent a half season with the Cleveland Cavaliers (1981-82) before enjoying his greatest success in Detroit, where, from 1983-1992, he lead the Pistons to nine consecutive playoff appearances, culminating with world championships in 1989 and 1990. He later led the New Jersey Nets to consecutive winning records and playoff appearances from 1992 to 1994. Prior to joining the NBA, Coach Daly had a winning percentage of better than 70% in eight seasons of college coaching (two seasons at Boston College) and six seasons at the University of Pennsylvania) and led the University of Pennsylvania to four straight Ivy League titles. Coach Daly had been a teacher, a psychotherapist and, at times a parent as well as one of the game's most successful coaches and achieved such success by teaching his players that success may be achieved through dedication and hard work. Coach Daly was interested in players who maintained a steady work ethic and conducted themselves as professionals and believed that those players who faced failure and persevered through adversity wouldl use the talent they had to achieve their goals.
